    Turkey 2006

Just back from a week in Turkey to find it's the hottest day of the year so far in UK. Mind you it's just touching 30c here and it was just about 40c most days last week in Side.

The sea was 22c which was fantastic - warmest I've ever swum in - but the evenings were a bit uncomfortable for sleeping at around 25c.

Stayed at the Kentia Appartments. If you ever go to Side and end up at the Kentia - don't judge it on first arrival! We got there at about 5.30am and thought we'd been dropped in the middle of nowhere. It's not exactly the most developed area of town! And no sooner had we got to sleep after a fairly long dog leg of a flight (from Exeter to Humberside then 4 hours to Antalya before another hour on a coach), than the "Butlins Camp Wake Up Call" is sounding out through the speakers of the poolside disco in an effort to rival Robin Williams in 'Good Morning Vietnam!'.

Add to that the fact we'd been given the wrong appartment and it was beginning to feel like the plot for one of those Holidays from Hell TV programmes.

However a quick chat to our rep, Joel, and the room situation was sorted out (although we never did get our complimentary bottle of wine for the inconvenience) and a quick scan of the map and things started to look better.

Blue skies without a whisp of a cloud in sight, a lovely swimming pool, friendly staff, comfortable accommodation, good food and the daily wake up calls (which weren't actually till 10am anyhow) managed to fade into insignificance. We even forgave the guests who got up at 7am to put their towels on the sun-loungers and then never came and sat on them til midday!

Just around the corner, Anatolia Restaurant serves great breakfasts!

Kentia Appartments are about 10 mins from the beach - and the beach is lovely. It's lined with restaurants and bars which, through the day offer you free sunloungers and sunshades in return for you buying the occasional cola, beer or water. We found one called Rainbow (no sign of Bungle, Zippy, George or Geoffrey, thankfully) and were made to feel very welcome. "Ah Een-ger-land," as we were collectively known. "Ow are you?"

At night the same place transforms. The sunloungers are put away and the beach is lit by candles as dinner is served at tables arranged on the sand - with the waves lapping at the shore. Three of us could enjoy a very tasty three course meal with a couple of beers each for around 88 lira - roughly £30! It's the first time I've come back from a holiday with money still in my pocket, rather than the usual trip to the cashpoint for more on the final couple of days.

Side itself is full of ancient history and comes alive at night when the choice of restaurants is overwhelming. We had three great meals in one at the bottom of the town - called The Rising Sun. It's a little more expensive than eating at Rainbow on the beach but still no more than about £18 each.

More than a week and I would have needed to take an excursion or two as I had started to get bored with just sitting on the beach - but a jet-ski ride (with the price knocked down because the owner of Rainbow knew the chap who owned them!) was fantastic fun.

I'd recommend it to anyone who likes lots of sunshine and friendly people.

    Land of Limbo

I'm trying to work out just exactly how I'm feeling at the moment. Mum died unexpectedly last weekend (but quickly and peacefully) and the following week all seems a bit of a blur now. Traveling up and down to Lyme, making arrangements etc etc, it's amazing how quickly everything happens and then a week later I'm back at work.

Coming back to do the first programme on air was weird. Not sure whether I should be upbeat or sombre, should I tell listener the reason for my unscheduled disappearance or keep quiet? I decided I would.

I haven't really cried much at all. Now and again something sets me off but it's short-lived and disappears almost as soon as it arrives. But I'm feeling really prickly. Almost itching for a fight. I know that's a bad thing and I hope it won't last too long, but I find myself saying and doing things that I wouldn't expect. And my eyes feel like I've been crying constantly, even though I haven't.

Working on the radio means you have to sometimes deal with some really nasty people - much nastier than any customers I ever had in the pub or hotel trade. When I took over the late show I was expecting not to be liked by some of the audience, and thought I'd get complaints for several weeks. Thankfully most complaints seemed to die down within about a week and a half - but you would not believe SOME of the emails and texts that arrive. I guess people think that, as I'm paid to do the job, I'm paid to take whatever they throw my way.

Having said that, there have been some REALLY nice ones too. It's just a case of ignoring the shites and taking pleasure in the compliments.

Anyhow - I'm not really sure what I'm waffling on about here. I just thought I hadn't blogged for some time and thought I'd put down a bit of what I'm feeling. Not sure if I've even done that now.

But I do know I have a lot of friends. I just hope I don't piss any of them off with my current prickly state. Just call me Mr Tiggywinky for now!

    January 07

    I'm crap at this!

Is it really 3 months or more since I last wrote anything here...? Rubbish aren't I?!

Actually I've not really done much online for a while. Work has been pretty busy leading up to Christmas. I've three bands waiting to be added to my SouthWestDemos.com website which I plan to do shortly. I'm still trying to find replacement software/programmes to replace my message board and postcard section which just gave up the ghost for no apparent reason at the end of last year.

I'm desperate to sort out a holiday so that there's something to look forward to but unfortunately I seem to be the only one with any real desire to go anywhere! It's currently only £26 each way to fly to Portugal! Although I have to say I'd quite like to go somewhere different this year like Bulgaria or Croatia. Anyone been? What's it like?

Car is just about to go in to the garage to get brakes checked and reversing lights sorted then it's time for another walk with the hound! And it's pissing down outside so that will be lovely!

Two radio programmes over christmas have had lots of feedback, all good. Back to Portuguese classes on Monday night. Can't decide if I really want to go anymore or if I've had enough. I think it's probably more to do with the dark cold nights than anything else. I probably WILL go back for a second term at least.

Well if anyone's reading this and got any good ideas for adventures  -  I'm open to all suggestions!

I'll try and write again before April!

    September 25

    Back on dry land

What a fantastic four days afloat. I thoroughly recommend a canal boat holiday to anyone who wants to get away from everything and just watch the world passing by in slow motion.

That's not to say it's not hard work, coz it is. But it's also lots of fun once you've got yourselves co-ordinated.

It was basically a journey of achievements and embarrassments - most of them within five minutes of each other. No sooner have you managed to do something perfectly - like a three point turn or getting a 55' boat into a 60' lock without crashing - you then do something really stupid like running aground. But it doesn't matter.

We were told that it was a contact sport anyhow!

When we arrived at the boat house we found that the boat we'd booked had caught fire the day before! So we were upgraded to a 55' long, 1year old. £80k, 6-berth boat instead. It was great!

You get about ten minutes of tuition (taken through a lock and one three point turn) and then you're off on your own!

Well rather than me ramble on forever - take a look at the photos. And then add your name to the list if you fancy being crew members next time!!!!

    lol

PS What's everybody doing for Christmas and New Year? Is it about time we thought about partying??

    September 14

    In need of adventure

I'm crap at spending time on my own. It's ok for the first day (in fact that's often quite nice) but after that I get bored too quickly.

I've got a couple of weeks off work. Next week we're off on a canal boat for 4 days so I'm looking forward to that but this week I've no plans and I'm already starting to pull out what little hair I have.

Been out for some long walks with Tilly but today it's grey and wet and we've already got soaked this morning so not sure where we'll head next. On Monday we were swimming in the sea - don't think that's going to happen today!

I've put together the Quintessential Quiz questions for Saturday - was told they were too easy last week so I've made them a bit more difficult this time.

I'm still waiting to hear back from the helpdesk who provided the cgi message boards for southwestdemos.com - it's been playing up ever since I installed it so I'm thinking I might just replace it for another. Any suggestions for easy to install and maintain message boards that can be integrated into the furniture of your site rather than taking you off elsewhere?

Well - as the most exciting thing I can think of is writing this blog, and as this is now complete, I'm going to have to put my brain in gear and come up with summat to do.

I'm in need of adventure..... and that's always dangerous! lol

    August 21

    Sunday funday

Hurrah it's Sunday - the only day of the week that I'm not working at the moment! AND THE SUN'S OUT!

Off to Mount Edgcumbe in a bit - Tilly loves it on the boat over (especially if any of the other passengers happen to have bought an ice-cream before boarding!)

Just been checking my lottery numbers. It's ages since I've played but I had the urge to buy a ticket yesterday - but just like most of my urges, it came to nothing!

Ah well! Thank goodness for credit cards!!

Here's something you could help me with... I'm looking for a list of songs that make you feel good, songs that make you think of blue sky and sunshine - the sort you'd play loud in your car with the roof down on a summer day. Any thoughts?

    Two Thirty

When I was young I had to be given sedatives at the mere mention of the word dentist. I would have to be dragged there kicking and screaming and held down in the seat if there was to be any treatment.

I can't remember when it was that I grew out of that, but thankfully I no longer have such a fear of having someone prod around in my mouth... (at this point you can make your own jokes!).

Today I had to have an abscess removed from above one of my front teeth. All done under local anaesthetic, it took around an hour and was totally painless.

I'm now having a day or two off with enough painkillers to sink a battleship to keep the aches at bay. I was warned that I'd look like a hamster and feel like someone had punched me in the nose but so far the painkillers have done their job well.

Unfortunately, though, I also have some to take some antibiotics which, if mixed with alcohol, give you the mother of all hangovers, so no tipple for me for the next week or so! Ah well - lucky I'm tee-total then!

    Say Cheese!

Here are the holiday snaps... you need shockwave player:

Takes a while to download.... PS I'm the good looking one!

    July 27

I don't mean to moan but.....

What shite weather! It's July for bleeding hell's sake... how on earth am I gonna keep this tan that caused me so much pain to get? (Four hours in the sun on the beach at Albufeira on the first day of the hols followed by almost a week of suffering - which could only be numbed by increased consumption of alcohol!)

Back to reality with a bump now - think I'm going to book up to go again in September!
    July 12

    Cinco Cervejas faz favor

      Bye then!

See you in a couple of weeks time!

    July 02

    Ten days to go

Can't believe it's so long since I last left a blog here.... must be because I've been such a busy boy!

Was supposed to have gone into hospital this week to have an abscess removed from above one of my front teeth but when I got there (I was the first appointment) they told me the Doctor had fallen down the stairs and cracked her ribs so it's been postponed now. And there was I thinking I could have a couple of days off on the sick...instead I ended up at work with a to-do list as long as an elephant's willy!

South West Demos is going well - at least it is as far as Devon goes. If anyone knows any unsigned bands in Cornwall, Dorset, Somerset or The Channel Islands give them a nudge in my direction.

And if YOU fancy signing up to the message board that would be good too.

Off into Plymouth now - am working on the BBC Big Screen that is showing Live8. (Only found out I was a couple of days ago). Suppose I'll get to 'hear' the concert even if I don't see much of it....

Anyhow - best go. Oh yeh - the title of the blog, I forgot. Ten days until holidays and I can't bloody wait! (Suppose I need to start thinking about arranging some accommodation....)

    Getting there!

Well I reckon South West Demos is about a week or two away from being fit for human consumption. I have had a LOT of interest from the people I have emailed. Now I'm just waiting for them to contribute their demos and paperwork.

On Saturday I'm off to Launceston for a chat with Tony Butler of Big Country fame so that I have a page to start off the features section. My next task is to start populating the venues pages.

I'm really quite pleased with the way it's going and the feedback I've had so far.

Still no word about my job or whether I'll still have one this time next year...? Ah well - like it says at the top of this page, "Que sera, sera!" or as they say in Portugal "No faz mal!".

Which reminds me it's only three weeks and five days away! Bring it on!

    June 11

    219

So the PO Box number for SouthWestDemos.com has arrived. Actually it had already been set up and the paperwork sent out over a week ago. Pretty amazing that Royal Mail can't even manage to deliver their own literature but hey, it's here now. POBox 219.

I've still a couple more things to do before I can really start pushing the site. I need to get a feature written - got several ideas on the go so shouldn't be too long - and I've already had four demos promised - one that's already arrived and on site.

I've got the venues page to write - a few odd links to sort and then I think I'm set. The idea is to start small and see what happens.

Just back from Roadford Lake and Tilly's had a bath  - amazing, she's actually a black dog! I was beginning to think she was just a dusty grey. She's now sat drying herself. Nice run out and good walk around the lake but amazingly there are no dog bins.... how silly is that?!

Four weeks, three days until the holiday now... I've no money at all, my mortgage is about to go up by £150 a month and  my job is still not certain... ah well, I can't think of any better reason to increase the overdraft and get away from it all. Sorted the E111 forms today. Now all I need is to win the lottery!

That's about it, no plans for this evening - may do a bit more to the site. Was going to have a barbecue but I think it's about to rain. British Summertime - don't ya just love it!

    June 06

Five weeks, one day and counting...

Bring on the sun! Five weeks, one day and very definitely counting. I have absolutley zero dosh, my job is uncertain and we've no confirmation on accommodation - but what the heck! Boy I need this holiday...

My latest crazy website idea is about 90% ready now. Hopefully I'll get my PO Box number this week, then I can start publicising it and hopefully populate the pages. At the moment I've still some broken links but if you want a sneak preview, take a look at www.southwestdemos.com/contribute/ - like I say it's not finished but you'll get a fair idea.

Just been playing rough and tumble with Tilly. Covered with scratches now. Canine domestic violence - that's what I call it!

Had a really good night out on Friday. It was SO needed! Had several drinks and a slightly throbbing head on Saturday but it was worth it!

    Luvly Jubbly Sunshine

Great Bank Holiday weekend - lots of sunshine and blue sky, just the way it should be. Yesterday's gathering of the great and famous was a lot of fun. I think at one stage we were having a competition with the neighbours to see whose barbecue could make the most smoke!

When the sun's out it does strange things to the brain - so strange that I brought a bike on Sunday! I've got this urge to do a bit of exercise. Mind you I was knackered just riding it to the end of the road and back! Tilly looked at me as though I was stupid. She's probably right!

Had to work today - even with all the windows open it was 82 degrees in the office. Still there were very few people in because of the bank holiday so I left an hour early and took Tilly for a long walk along the beach at Seaton and Downderry. She's snoring now!

Not long till the holiday - hurrah! .  I've absolutely no money but who cares - I just want to be there now.

I'm hoping the postman will deliver details of my PO Box number this week, then I can start getting contributions for my new website. Hopefully it won't be too long now. And when it goes live you'll be one of the first to know....

    May 17

    CGI, PHP, Blah Blah Blah

OK, I'm just at the point of throwing the computer out of the window!

Count to ten and calm down:

1.. I went on the hunt for some free scripts the other day 2... and found a couple I liked 3...
One was for an e-postcard programme 4... the other for a mailing list (not sure why i thought i might need a mailing list?) 5... and for the past few days and nights I've been trying 6... to work out the CGI code 7...

Why is it they never come with nice simple instructions and are always set up to work in one main folder, so 8... when I try and split into other folders it all goes 9... tits up!

Anyhow I've eventually sorted out the postcards (it was easy actually - once I stumbled across a tutorial somewhere online) and I've sorted the mailing list too 10... by realising I don't actually need one!

Ahhh that's better. I feel better for getting that off my chest.

It's 8 weeks today before holidays! Hurrah - I love sunshine!   bring it on!

I'm still thinking of having a barbie (the food not the doll!) on Bank Holiday weekend.

I'm at the County Show this week - and on the picket line next... what a hectic schedule eh?

Oh and Watch this space for news of the launch of my new website(s) - coming soon - with or without cgi!

    May 05

    Barbecue anyone?

OK. Who's up for a barbie on the next bank holiday weekend?

I reckon it's about time we took a chance on there being some sunshine and had a bit of a get-together.... what do you reckon?

    Saturday night or Sunday afternoon?

    May 02

    Domain names

So the JG stable of domain names has just increased by four....

I had this thought today that if I am going to be one of those people made reduntant in the proposed swathe of cuts it would be good to have some ideas tucked away in my back pocket.

I've had another idea which I think could do well. Obviously I can't tell you what it is now - but I'm quite pleased with it. Now I need to start thinking about how to turn it into reality.

And on that point.... I'm looking for a decent, easy to use message board - preferably one that is switchable between pre and post moderation depending on how much time I can devote to it. Any ideas?

I curently use a php board on ILoveDorset.com  which may well be the one I end up with for this new venture, but I think I'd like to take a look around first.

Been to Polperro today. Said hi to Richard and Judy - no idea if they were at home or not but said hi anyway. It's managed to knacker Tilly out yet again as she's asleep on the sofa now and taking up more room than you'd think caninely possible which is why I'm typing rubbish on my blog! (And because telly is crap - what's new - it's about time they took on some of my entertainment ideas!!!)

I was due to be back at work tomorrow but I was told this morning that I could have it off (ooher misses!) so I've got an unexpected extra day. Bet it pees down! Oh well, if it does I can do some research for my new website idea.

Well that's it for another day.... not going to win any prizes for having the most exciting existence but hey, the sun came out so all in all it's been a good day!

    May 01

Find me a maypole and I'll dance around it!

Hurrah, off tomorrow. May Bank Holiday, aren't we supposed to go dancing around maypoles or summat? Or was that today 1st May? Think I'll give it a miss if you don't mind.

I like May. I think it's probably my favourite month. Cherry blossom and new growth and all that romantic slush.... must be going soft in my old age!

Went for a walk up to the Avon Dam after walk today, with a bunch of reprobates I know! Tilly is now flat out (and smelling of river) asleep on the sofa. No doubt the others will be too (asleep that is, not smelling of river!).

That's about it for today - nothing else of any interest to report...

    April 29

    Work, work and more work

That's what happens when you have a week off.... you come back to seven days in a row before you get another day off! The first five have gone quite quickly but now I've got the weekend ahead. Oh well - at least I'm still in a job at the moment.

Been for a walk at Lopwell Dam this evening, great place if a little wet and misty. Last time we were there, a seal was playing in the river.

Heard from Brian and Joe by text  - they're enjoying their honeymoon in Portugal. Reckon they've loads of room in their villa.... tempting, very tempting. But I'm there myself in July. Going for my birthday. Wanna come?
